I was told by several people to stay away from buying a used Force motor.
Can someone knowledgeable tell me what years and HP model or reason they
have such a bad reputation. Please skip the biases and rumors. What was the
real problem?

I have a 1998 50hp Force and it's a great motor. My next door neighbor had a
smaller and older Force on his last boat and says it was a dream compared to
the Yamaha he has now.
As I understand it, most of the major parts are actually Mercury parts.

Force is the old 'Chrysler motor bought by Merc, and they used the old
Chrysler blocks. I had a 1998 40 hp Force and would never buy one again. I
can't explain it, but I never felt safe out on the lake. I sold it on the
boat and bought me a used 50 hp Mercury on a fishing boat and you can't
compare the two. For me I would never buy another Force.
